I think a lot of the changes were in the support electronics rather than the physical motor. As I alluded to in the opening post, actual technical information beyond what's aimed at motoring journalists is hard to find (though whether my 25 year old electronics degree is still good enough to understand it will be my problem).

Skoda says: improved permanent magnets of the rotor, high number of turns of the stator winding, more powerful pulse converter.

Best I could find was VW's original press release: https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/ ... ency-15699

Good one - thanks.

I love the quote at the end of the first paragraph - "a considerable increase in vehicle efficiency."
So, Hr. Bennewitz, how much is 'considerable'?

Apart from the output and torque there isn't a number anywhere in that release. Maybe that's not the place to look for tech details.

One thing that does surprise me is that Volkswagen manufactures these things themselves. I really thought they'd have bought in the motor and gearbox from a long-time industrial motor manufacturer, like ABB, Siemens etc. Maybe all the improvements are really just VW learning what to do!!

I guess because the new motor design is used in many different vehicles (ID.x series, Skoda Enyaq/Elroq, Cupra Born/Tavascan, Audi Q4, Ford Explorer etc) it's hard to put a number on actual road performance. Suspect a big lardy ID.Buzz won't be the same a an Enyaq Coupe/Tavascan/ID.5 purely down to aerodynamics.

But yes, the rear motor is entirely VW designed. I suspect they probably employed people who have experience in brushless motor design to get it off the ground. The rotors and some other components are made by Eurotranciatura S.p.a in Italy who are a very experienced motor production company. The rest of the motor and gearbox parts are made in Germany, Czechia and China (for the Asian markets). The front motor is from a Canadian motor specialist company, Magna, who supply motors (for wipers, windows etc.) to a huge number of automotive companies. It's good that they've got such an increase in torque for the same sized unit in just a few years though - shows that EV power systems should continue to evolve a time goes on.

Inhouse design keeps the costs down i guess? OK you have upfront costs in design and development, but once your in mass production its going to be cheaper to build it in house, than to buy in someone elses motor.

It actually surprised me a little that they developed the APP550 so soon after the 310. You'd have thought they want to stretch out the economies of scale and punch out millions of the 310, rather than spend more R&D developing the 550.
